Item Info

He wants chocolate, she wants vanilla....now they can both get their wish with Wilton's checkerboard cake pan set. This clever four-part system uses a simple dividing ring and three pans to stack up an eye-catching, crowd-pleasing treat. Simply place the plastic ring inside one of the 9-by-2-inch pans and fill in the nine sections with two alternating flavors of batter. Remove the ring and place it in the next pan, filling in the opposite pattern for the middle layer. Repeat the step for the third pan, then bake all three cakes in the oven. Once they're cool, simply set one layer on top of the next to create the cheerful checkerboard of flavors. The nonstick steel construction is the optimal metal for the job as it offers even heat distribution while baking, corrosion resistance for years of service, and easy, convenient cleanup in the dishwasher. Extra-wide handles provide cool, mess-free lifting and handling, and each pan holds a generous 5-1/2 cups of batter. Fun for kids' parties, holiday themes, or experimenting with new taste combinations (why limit it to two?), this pan set will bring out the artist in any baker-also included is a recipe booklet to get the ideas rolling. --Kara Karll

I purchased this set not from Amazon but from my local Michael's store - convinced by the packaging that it would be easy to make a presentable cake using their instructions.Used two Duncan Hines cake mixes instead of recipe on box - packaging says you don't have to use their recipe so that seemed safe enough. Reading other reviews, it appears that may have been a bad idea, as the Wilton recipe is a stiffer batter. Box should have included notes to that effect. As mentioned by another reviewer, the divider insert does not fit firmly at all - it should hook over the edges of the pan for better stability or something - even when I weighted the insert down with a soup can, pouring the batter in made it slide around and leak into other layers.Lifting the insert out using the tabs per instructions was a mess. On the 2nd pan, I tried coating the insert with Pam spray first which helped a bit.The tip about pouring your batter into pastry bag or ziploc bag to pipe into pans helped quite a bit and was a good tip.Summary:The pans themselves seemed fine, decent non-stick coating and handles make them easier to move in/out of oven. The insert fits loosely at best and is flimsy. I had to throw out the cake and make a standard layer cake instead because the batter did not in any way stay in the intended circles. Was a waste of $$ and will be donating to Goodwill, maybe someone else will have better luck.

Bad pans
Another Darned Customer

I think having a kit to create a checkerboard cake is a great idea, but for a company that specializes in decorating, it seems odd that they included nonstick pans that have sloped sides instead of basic aluminum pans with straight sides. Wilton makes some nice cake pans but these aren't it. I would gladly pay extra for pans that are more appropriate to creating a three layer cake. Because of the pans being nonstick, it was very difficult to make the divider insert stay in place while adding the batter. I would not recommend this product to anyone wanting to make a nice looking cake.

Um.....You can't change physics.

My older sister bought this for me as a birthday gift, (I bake....a lot)and i was super excited. But before I even used the product you KNOW as an intelligent human that thick batter will move that flimsy plastic insert (that has so side clips or rubberized edge to stop batter bleeding)in a nanosecond. In short- this product can NEVER be used as intended with a perfect result. However, if you're like me and refuse to be bettered by something as sad as this, you take a different approach. Using this insert as a "cookie cutter" of sorts will product the perfect cut outs to assemble a perfectly executed checkerboard cake. Hence at least 2 stars.Hope it helps
